Local jewelry line to showcase Lakota culture

RAPID CITY, SD (KEVN) — Visitors to western South Dakota may want to remember their experience in the Black Hills by taking something home.

A local company, Jewelry by Decory, is offering just that with the launch of their “Lakota Legacy Line” focused on sharing culture.

Company owner Doug Napier said each piece, whether it’s the buffalo, dragonfly or butterfly, has a different story to tell.

Instead of faceless fabrications, every piece is made in South Dakota.

“It’s something that’s close to our hearts, because it’s something that we believe in. You know, most jewelry today is made overseas, in production facilities, and then it’s sold here. It’s something we make all locally, so it’s made right here in Rapid City, South Dakota,” Napier explained.

The pieces are not promoted or intended to compete with Native American jewelry.

Napier said they use contemporary designs as a vehicle to educate others about the culture.

“My family is actually from Rosebud and I’m a registered member, but I just use the designs we have as a way to positively promote the culture and family that was thrown into my life when I was growing up. My grand- father and my uncle helped make me who I am and this is my way of saying thank you,” Napier said.

The company employs locals to ensure that handcrafted jewelry showcases important aspects of culture.
